The Exceptionally Ordinary Dog
Kouta had a dog named Mochi. To most people, Mochi looked like a perfectly normal dog. He was small, fluffy, and a little chubby.
But Kouta knew that Mochi was exceptionally special.
Mochi could always tell when Kouta was sad. On the days Kouta failed a test or had a fight with a friend, Mochi would quietly walk over and place his tiny paw on Kouta's knee — as if to say, "I'm here."
Mochi was not exceptionally fast. He was not exceptionally smart — he still could not figure out how doors worked. He barked at mirrors every single day.
But Mochi was exceptionally good at one thing: making Kouta feel that he was never alone.
One evening, Kouta's teacher asked the class to write about someone exceptionally important in their life. Every other student wrote about a famous person or a hero.
Kouta wrote about Mochi.
His teacher smiled and said, "This is exceptionally well written."
Kouta smiled too — not because of the compliment, but because writing about Mochi had made him realize something. You don't have to be exceptionally talented or famous to matter deeply to someone.
Sometimes, a small fluffy paw on your knee is more than enough.
