さらに古高ドイツ語 spellon(「語る・話す」)が元とされています。

"Do you know what spelling means?"
Tom: Hey, do you know what "spelling" means? Lisa: Of course! It means writing letters in the correct order to form a word. Tom: Great! So how do you spell "fish"? Lisa: Easy. F-I-S-H. Tom: Wrong! You can also spell it G-H-O-T-I! Lisa: What?! That's not right! Tom: Oh yes it is! "GH" sounds like F in "enough," "O" sounds like I in "women," and "TI" sounds like SH in "nation." So... G-H-O-T-I = "fish"! Lisa: ...I think I need to go lie down. Tom: Don't worry. English spelling makes everyone feel that way.

The Spelling Champion
Kenji was a quiet boy who loved words. Every evening, he sat at his desk and practiced his spelling. He wrote each word ten times in his notebook. His favorite word to spell was "necessary" because he remembered it with a little trick: one collar and two socks — one "c" and two "s"s.
One day, his school announced a spelling bee. Students from every class would compete to see who could spell the most difficult words correctly. Kenji was nervous, but he signed up anyway.
On the day of the contest, the gym was full of students and parents. One by one, students were asked to spell words. Some were easy, like "simple" and "garden." But then the words got harder — "conscience," "pharaoh," and "pneumonia."
Kenji stood at the microphone, took a deep breath, and spelled each word slowly and clearly. In the final round, only he and one other student remained. The judge said, "Your word is 'rhythm.'"
Kenji smiled. He had practiced this one many times.
"R-H-Y-T-H-M," he said calmly.
The crowd cheered. Kenji had won.
That night, his mother hugged him and said, "See? Good spelling really does matter."
Kenji just laughed and said, "Now I need to learn the spelling of every word in the dictionary."
