Alex: Hey, do you know what orthography means? Yuki: Ortho... graphy? Like, a photo taken in a straight line? Alex: Ha! No, no. It means the correct way to spell words in a language — the rules of spelling. Yuki: Oh! So it's like... the law of spelling? Alex: Exactly! And English orthography is like a law written by someone who was half asleep. Yuki: Right! "Knight," "knife," "kneel" — why is the K silent?! Alex: Nobody knows. The judge retired centuries ago and never came back.
The Spelling Puzzle
English orthography is one of the most confusing in the world. Imagine learning a language where "tough," "through," "though," "thought," and "thorough" all look similar but are pronounced in completely different ways. Frustrating, right?
This happens because English orthography did not grow from a single, planned system. Instead, it evolved over more than a thousand years, borrowing words from French, Latin, Greek, and many other languages — and keeping their original spellings.
For example, the word "knight" was once pronounced with a hard "k" sound. People said "k-nicht." Over time, the pronunciation changed, but the spelling stayed the same. That is why English orthography often seems like a museum of old sounds.
Some people believe English orthography should be reformed to match modern pronunciation. Others argue that changing the spelling would erase centuries of history and make old books harder to read.
One thing is certain: no matter how messy English orthography may seem, millions of people learn it every year — and most of them survive the experience.
