しかし1970〜80年代に、アメリカの医師・教授 Jon Kabat-Zinn(ジョン・カバット・ジン) が仏教の瞑想実践(特に「念」=Pali語で sati)を医療や心理学の文脈に取り入れ、MBSR(Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction/マインドフルネスストレス低減法) を開発しました。

A: Do you know what mindfulness means? B: Hmm... is it like being very careful about your mind? Like wearing a helmet for your brain? A: Ha! Kind of. It means paying full attention to the present moment — what you see, hear, and feel — without judging it. B: Oh, I see. So right now, I should be fully aware of this moment? A: Exactly! What are you noticing? B: ...I'm noticing that I'm very, very hungry and all I can think about is ramen. A: ...That's actually perfect mindfulness. B: Great. Now can we be mindful over at the noodle shop?

A Morning with Mindfulness

Every morning, Kenji sat quietly by the window before breakfast.

He closed his eyes and took a slow, deep breath. He paid attention to the cool air coming in through his nose. He noticed the warm sunlight on his face. He heard the birds singing outside. He did not think about work. He did not worry about tomorrow. He just stayed in that moment.

This was his mindfulness practice.

At first, he thought it was strange. "I'm just sitting here doing nothing," he told his friend Yuki.

"No," Yuki said. "You're doing something very important. You're being here."

Kenji didn't understand at first. But slowly, day by day, he noticed something changing. He felt calmer. He got angry less easily. He enjoyed his meals more. He even started to notice how beautiful the evening sky was — something he had never paid attention to before.

Mindfulness didn't solve all his problems. But it helped him see his life more clearly, one moment at a time.

One day, his boss asked him, "Kenji, why do you always seem so calm?"

Kenji smiled and said, "I'm just paying attention."
