definition はラテン語の "definitio" に由来します。
- de-（完全に、下に）＋ finire（終わらせる、境界を決める）＋ -tion（名詞語尾）
「境界をきっちり決めること」がもともとの意味で、そこから「言葉の範囲・意味を決めること＝定義」という意味になりました。finish（終わらせる）や final（最終の）とも同じラテン語の根 finis（境界・終わり） を持ちます。
