"Do you know what 'collectivist' means?"

Tom: Do you know what "collectivist" means? Yuki: Hmm... is it someone who collects things? Like stamps or coins? Tom: Ha! That's a good guess, but no. A collectivist is someone who believes the group is more important than the individual. Yuki: Oh, I see! So, like... someone who always shares their lunch? Tom: Well, kind of. More like someone who thinks society should work together for the common good. Yuki: Interesting! My mom always makes me share my snacks with my little brother. Does that make her a collectivist? Tom: (laughing) Maybe. Or maybe she's just... a mom.

East and West: Two Ways of Thinking

Have you ever noticed that people in different countries behave differently in groups?

In many Western countries, people are taught from a young age to be independent. They are encouraged to share their own opinions, make their own choices, and stand out from the crowd. This way of thinking is called individualism.

But in many Asian, African, and Latin American countries, the opposite is true. People grow up learning that the group — whether it is the family, the school, or the workplace — is more important than the individual. A person who holds this belief is called a collectivist.

A collectivist does not ask, "What is best for me?" Instead, they ask, "What is best for us?"

For example, in a collectivist culture, a young person might choose a career not because they personally love it, but because it will bring honor and stability to their family. They might avoid speaking out in a meeting, not because they have nothing to say, but because they do not want to make others feel bad.

Of course, no person is 100% collectivist or 100% individualist. We all carry a little of both inside us. But understanding these two ways of thinking can help us be more patient and open-minded when we meet people from different backgrounds.

The world is big, and there is more than one way to live a good life.

このような信念を持つ人を collectivist(集団主義者) と言います。
