The Scientist's Best Guess
Dr. Yamamoto was a brilliant scientist, but she had one habit that drove her colleagues crazy. She never gave exact answers.
"How long will the experiment take?" asked her assistant Kenji.
"Approximately three days," she said, scribbling in her notebook.
"And how much will it cost?"
"An approximate figure would be around two million yen."
Kenji sighed. "Can't you ever give me a straight answer?"
Dr. Yamamoto looked up and smiled. "Kenji, in science, the honest answer is almost always an approximate one. An exact answer often means someone is pretending to know more than they do."
Kenji thought about that for a moment.
"So… approximately how sure are you about that?" he asked.
Dr. Yamamoto laughed. "About ninety percent. Give or take."
