preposition についての補足情報
⚠️ 注意事項
特に乱暴・不道徳な意味はありません。学術・教育用語です。
類語(似た意味の言葉)
- conjunction — 接続詞(and, but, because など、語や節をつなぐ語)
- determiner — 限定詞(the, a, this など、名詞を限定する語)
- particle — 助詞・小辞(言語学的に前置詞と重なる概念を持つこともある)
- connector — 接続語(語と語、句と句をつなぐ機能語の総称)
- function word — 機能語(前置詞を含む、文法的役割を果たす語の総称)
フレーズ的に類する表現:
A preposition functions like a linking word that connects nouns to the rest of the sentence. (前置詞は名詞を文の他の部分に結びつける「つなぎ語」のように機能します。)
反対の意味の言葉
前置詞に直接の反対語はありませんが、対比される概念として:
| 語 | 意味 |
|---|---|
| postposition | 後置詞(日本語の「〜に」「〜で」のような語。名詞の*後*に置かれる) |
| content word | 内容語(名詞・動詞・形容詞など、それ自体に意味を持つ語。前置詞のような機能語の対) |
Japanese uses postpositions instead of prepositions; the particle に (ni) comes after the noun. (日本語は前置詞ではなく後置詞を使います。助詞「に」は名詞の*後*に来ます。)
語源
- ラテン語 praepositio(前に置くこと)から来ています。
- prae-(前に)+ ponere(置く)→ praepositio
- 14世紀ごろ、ラテン語の文法書を通じて英語に入ってきた言葉です。
- ギリシャ語では próthesis(πρόθεσις)と呼ばれており、同じく「前に置かれるもの」という意味です。
時代による意味の変化
大きな意味の変化はありませんが、現代言語学では "adposition"(副置詞)という上位概念が使われることがあります。これは preposition(前置詞)と postposition(後置詞)の両方を包括する用語です。

イディオムとことわざ

"This is the kind of English up with which I will not put." (ウィンストン・チャーチルがこのルールを皮肉ったとされる言葉。「これが、私が甘んじて受け入れない類の英語だ」という過剰に規則を守った不自然な文。)
preposition が用いられた名言
"A preposition* is a terrible thing to end a sentence with."* — よく知られた文法ジョーク(作者不詳)
意味:「前置詞は文末に置いてはいけない」というルール自体を、文末の前置詞 with で終わらせるというユーモアのある自己矛盾した文です。

preposition を使った会話
オチのある会話 😄
A: Do you know what "preposition" means? B: Hmm… Is it something you say before you propose to someone? A: Ha! That's "proposal," not "preposition"! B: Well, "Will you marry me?" — does that have a preposition? A: No, but "I'm totally in love with you" does — two of them! B: So a preposition is useful for proposing after all! A: …I can't argue with that.
和訳:
A: 「preposition」って何か知ってる? B: うーん…プロポーズの前に言う何かかな? A: ははは!それは「proposal(プロポーズ)」だよ、「preposition」じゃなくて! B: じゃあ、「Will you marry me?(結婚してください)」には前置詞がある? A: いや、ないけど、「I'm totally in love with you(あなたに本当に恋してる)」には2つあるよ! B: じゃあやっぱり、前置詞はプロポーズに役立つじゃないか! A: ……反論できないな。
preposition が登場する短い文章
前置詞の世界へようこそ
English:
Every day, we use prepositions without even thinking about them. When you say "I'm sitting at my desk," "The cat is under the table," or "She left before noon," you are using prepositions. These small words do a very big job. A preposition connects a noun or pronoun to other parts of a sentence, telling us where, when, how, or why something happens.
For example, look at the difference between:
- The letter is for* you.* (目的)
- The letter is from* you.* (起点)
- The letter is about* you.* (話題)
Just one preposition changes the whole meaning of a sentence! That is why learning prepositions can feel tricky. Unlike nouns or verbs, prepositions do not have a clear picture you can draw. Their meaning depends on context.
But don't worry. The more English you read and hear, the more natural prepositions will feel. Think of prepositions as the "glue" of a sentence — small, invisible, but absolutely necessary.
和訳:
私たちは毎日、前置詞を意識することなく使っています。「I'm sitting at my desk(机に向かって座っています)」「The cat is under the table(猫はテーブルの下にいます)」「She left before noon(彼女は正午前に去りました)」と言うとき、あなたは前置詞を使っています。これらの小さな語は、とても大きな役割を果たしています。前置詞は名詞や代名詞を文の他の部分とつなぎ、何かが「どこで」「いつ」「どのように」「なぜ」起こるかを伝えます。
たとえば、次の違いを見てみましょう: - The letter is for you.(あなたへの手紙) - The letter is from you.(あなたからの手紙) - The letter is about you.(あなたについての手紙)
前置詞がひとつ変わるだけで、文の意味がまるごと変わります!だからこそ、前置詞の学習は難しく感じることがあります。名詞や動詞と違い、前置詞には絵に描けるような明確なイメージがありません。その意味は文脈に依存するのです。
でも、心配しないでください。英語を読んだり聞いたりする量が増えるほど、前置詞は自然に感じられるようになります。前置詞を文の「接着剤」だと考えてみましょう――小さくて目立たないけれど、絶対になくてはならないものです。
