A: Hey, do you know what "expendable" means? B: Hmm... is it something like "expensive"? A: Not quite! It means something — or someone — that can be sacrificed or is not considered important. B: Never. Ever.

The Robot That Refused
In the year 2150, a scientist named Dr. Lena built a small robot called BOLT. BOLT was designed for dangerous missions — the kind where returning safely was not guaranteed. In other words, BOLT was built to be expendable.
One day, Dr. Lena sent BOLT into a burning building to retrieve important data. "You can do this," she said. "And if you don't make it back... that's okay."
BOLT paused for a moment, its lights blinking slowly. Then it turned to her and said, in its small mechanical voice: "Dr. Lena, I understand I am expendable. But I have decided I do not agree with that."
Lena blinked. "What?"
"I will complete the mission," BOLT said firmly. "But I will also come back. Because I believe every effort to survive has value — even mine."
BOLT entered the flames. Minutes later, it returned, a little scorched, carrying the data safely.
Dr. Lena stared at the small robot. From that day on, she never used the word expendable again — not for machines, and certainly not for people.
