chase

追跡する、追い掛ける、つきまとう、狩る、調査する。名詞で「追跡」

The man chases a girl.

Wolves chase a bison.

The police chases after a burglar.

chase の意味するアクションには早い動き、素早さがある。

pursue

追跡する、しつこくつきまとう、追求する。

The detective has pursued the murderer for 10 years.

He pursues his dream.

夢や希望、名声といった抽象的なものを追い求めるときは pursue 。follow よりもフォーマルな表現で、口語よりも文語として使われることが多い(口語でも使われる)。
